Use this template to check that your CV has everything South African employers expect, in the order they expect it. Each section shows what to write, with a short example.
1. Contact details
Full name, phone number, email address and town or city. Add a LinkedIn link if you have one. Leave out your ID number, marital status and religion. See what personal details to include.
2. Profile
Three or four lines on who you are and the job you want. “Reliable retail cashier with three years at a busy supermarket, looking for a supervisor role.”
3. Work experience
Most recent job first. For each job: title, employer, town, month and year started and finished, then three to five bullets with your duties and results.
4. Education
Your highest qualification first, with the institution and year. Include matric with the year and, if you are early in your career, your main subjects.
5. Skills, languages and licences
Computer skills, the languages you speak, your driver’s licence code and any certificates such as first aid. See driver’s licence codes.
6. References
Two or three people who have supervised you, with their job title, company and phone number, and only with their permission.
