Most employers expect some negotiation, and a calm, well-prepared request rarely costs you the offer. The best time to negotiate is after you receive an offer and before you accept it.
Before you reply
- Know your number: look at salary surveys and job adverts for similar roles in your city, and decide the lowest figure you would accept.
- Read the whole package: many South African offers are given as cost to company (CTC), which includes the employer’s contributions to retirement fund, medical aid and other benefits. Work out the take-home pay.
- Thank them first: say you are pleased to receive the offer before you discuss the numbers.
Making the counter-offer
Ask once, clearly, and give a reason: “Based on my five years of payroll experience and the market rate for this role, I was hoping for R28 000 a month. Is there flexibility?” Then wait for their answer.
If the salary cannot move
Ask about other parts of the package: a review after six months, a sign-on bonus, extra leave, flexible hours, study support or the start date.
Tip: once you agree, ask for the final offer in writing and check it before you resign from your current job.
Avoid: inventing another offer, asking again after you have agreed, and accepting on the phone before you have seen the details.
