How to Apply for an Internal Promotion

How to apply for a promotion or a new role at your current employer: talk to your manager, update your CV and write a cover letter built on your results.

Applying internally has advantages: people already know your work. It also means you need to show that you are ready for more, not just good at your current job.

Before you apply

  • Read your company’s internal application policy; many ask you to tell your manager first.
  • Talk to your manager about the role and ask what the hiring manager will look for.
  • Find out what the new role involves from someone who does it, if you can.

Your CV and letter

Update your CV with your current role and results, even if HR already has a file on you. In your cover letter, show three things: results you achieved in this company, skills that match the new role, and why you want to grow in this direction.

“In two years as payroll administrator I cut payroll queries by a third and trained two new colleagues. I am applying for the payroll supervisor role to lead the team I already support.”

Tip: prepare for the interview as seriously as an external one. Panels often include people who do not know your work well.
Avoid: assuming you will get it because you are already there, criticising colleagues or your manager, and showing frustration with others if you are not successful. Ask for feedback instead.
