How to Fill In the Z83 Form for Government Jobs

How to complete the new Z83 application form for public service jobs in South Africa, what to attach, and the mistakes that get applications rejected.

To apply for a job in the national or provincial public service, you must complete the Z83 form, the official application for employment. Applications without a fully completed and signed Z83 are usually not considered, however good the CV.

Use the current form

The Department of Public Service and Administration introduced a new Z83 form in 2021. Download the latest version from the department’s website or the DPSA vacancy circular, and do not use old copies.

Filling it in

  • Write the post name and reference number exactly as they appear in the advert.
  • Complete every section. Write “N/A” where a question does not apply instead of leaving it blank.
  • Give your ID number, contact details and whether you have a driver’s licence if the post needs one.
  • Answer the questions about previous dismissals and conflicts of interest honestly.
  • Sign and date the form. An unsigned Z83 is a common reason for rejection.

What to attach

Attach a detailed CV with your qualifications, work history with dates and duties, and contactable references. Many departments now ask only for the Z83 and CV at first, and request certified copies of qualifications and ID from shortlisted candidates, but follow the instructions in each advert exactly.

i
Builder tip: Build your CV in the builder, then download it as a PDF to attach to the Z83. Make sure your job dates match on both documents.

Sending it

Use the method in the advert, whether that is an email address, an online portal or a physical address, and send it before the closing date. Apply separately for each post with its own Z83.

Avoid: an old version of the form, an unsigned Z83, a missing reference number, and one Z83 for several posts.
