How to Answer “Why Should We Hire You?”

A simple three-part answer to “Why should we hire you?”: match the job’s needs, give proof, and show you want this role, with sample answers.

“Why should we hire you?” is an invitation to sum up your case in under a minute. Interviewers want to hear that you understand the job, can show you have done similar work, and actually want this role.

A three-part answer

  • Their need: name the two or three things the job needs most, taken from the advert.
  • Your proof: one short example or number for each.
  • Your motivation: one sentence on why this company or role, specifically.

Sample answer

“You need someone who can keep the stockroom accurate and keep up during peak season. In my last job I ran stock counts for a store with R 2 million in stock and kept the variance under 0.5%, and I handled the Black Friday rush two years in a row. I’d like to grow into a stock controller role, and your training programme is the reason I applied here rather than elsewhere.”

If you have little experience

Use evidence from school, studies, volunteering or part-time work, and lean on attitude with proof: “I finished my diploma while working weekends, so I know how to manage my time and turn up every day.”

Avoid: “Because I need a job”, comparing yourself to other candidates you have never met, and long lists of adjectives with no evidence.
