A polite follow-up can keep your application in mind and shows you are interested. The key is timing and keeping it short.
When to follow up
- After applying: about one to two weeks after the closing date, unless the advert says only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
- After an interview: send a thank-you email the same day, then follow up if you have not heard back by the date they gave you.
- After a verbal offer: ask when you can expect the written offer if it has not arrived within a few days.
A short example
“Dear Mr Naidoo, I applied for the Junior Accountant post (ref JA-104) on 3 November and wanted to confirm that my application was received. I remain very interested in the role and am available for an interview at any time. Kind regards, Thandi Nkosi, 082 000 0000.”
Builder tip: Keep a simple list of where you applied, the date and the reference number, and the version of your CV from the builder you sent to each employer.
If you hear nothing
Many adverts say that if you have not heard back within a certain time, your application was not successful. Follow up once, then put your energy into new applications.
Avoid: calling every day, following up before the closing date, and sending an angry email when you are not chosen.
