How to Explain a Gap on Your CV

Gaps are common. Here is how to show time out of work honestly: caring, studying, job hunting or health, without over-explaining.

A gap in your work history is not a deal breaker. Unemployment in South Africa is high and many people take time out to study, care for family or recover from illness. What matters is that the gap is explained briefly and honestly.

Show it, don’t hide it

Use months and years for every job. Hiding a gap by using only years usually backfires when an employer checks dates with a reference.

Give it a line

  • Career break, 2023–2024: full-time care for a family member.
  • Studying, 2022: completed a Higher Certificate in Accounting through UNISA.
  • Job seeking, 2024: took short courses in Excel and customer service while applying for roles.
i
Builder tip: Add courses, volunteering or freelance work from the gap as their own entries. They show you kept your skills current.

In the interview

Keep the explanation to one or two sentences, then move to what you are ready to do now. You do not need to share medical details.

Avoid: inventing jobs to fill a gap, or long paragraphs that explain more than the employer needs to know.
